The Castle can be visited

Château Raron, a historic castle in the Swiss canton of Valais, is perched on a hill west of Raron. Originally conceived as a refuge for the local population, it evolved over centuries into an important administrative seat and a testament to regional history.

History+

The origins of the castle complex date back to the 11th or early 12th century, although settlement on the castle hill is presumed to have existed in prehistoric and early historical times. Initially serving as a refuge castle, Château Raron was expanded into the seat of an episcopal administrator by the end of the 12th century. During this period, the central square residential tower was built, later enhanced in the 16th century with stepped gables, windows, and a latrine annex. The Bishops of Sion, who owned the region since the Kingdom of Upper Burgundy, appointed the Lords of Raron as their bailiffs from the 13th century. This family, named after the locality, quickly rose to become important representatives of the bishop's secular power and erected a fortified palas as a symbol of their status. In the 14th century, the bailiwick of Raron became a hereditary fief of the Asperlin family. The Lords of Raron played a decisive role in Valais history and, in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, aspired to a hereditary principality, which led to conflicts. An uprising in 1414, known as the Raron Affair, resulted in the destruction of their Beauregard fortress and the family's expulsion from Valais. The last of the lineage, Petermann von Raron, died in 1479. In 1515, the ruins of the Raron palas were converted into a church.
