History+

The history of the site where Château Ravire stands dates back a long way. A Roman legend tells of an escaped prisoner named Ber and a deserted Roman soldier named Nona, who settled on the hill, and whose settlement later became known as Bernona. In 515, the Burgundian King Sigismund donated the villages of Sierre and Bernune to the Abbey of St. Maurice. In 1412, Petermann de Chevron, Lord of Monthey, had a fortified castle built on the Bernona hill. However, this fortification was destroyed as early as 1417 during regional conflicts. The hill changed hands several times in the following centuries, including to Bishop Hildebrand von Riedmatten in 1570. In 1891, Auguste Clavel acquired the site and had a square tower built as a secondary residence. During construction, ancient finds, including a tomb with a bracelet and bones, were discovered. The Clavel family owned the tower until 1954, before it was sold to Etienne Savioz. Savioz expanded the building to its current form, built cellars, and acquired surrounding vineyards. Since 1979, Michel Savioz, Etienne's son, has been managing the “Clos du Château de Ravire” winery.
