Château Richard Cœur de Lion

The origins of the rectangular castle date back to the late 11th century, with additions in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was first mentioned in a document in 1135, naming Abbot William of Moissac, Vice-Count Saxet of Lomagne, and Vice-Countess Sybille of Auvillar. The oldest part of the complex is the north wing. The east wing, also known as the “English Wing,” with its “English Tower” at the northeast corner, is attributed to Richard the Lionheart. It is believed that he resided in the castle during his campaign in Quercy in 1185 and initiated the corresponding construction work.
