Château Saint-Maire (Lausanne)

Construction of the Château Saint-Maire began in 1397, commissioned by the Bishop of Lausanne. Guillaume de Menthonay oversaw the building work, which continued and was completed under Guillaume de Challant after Menthonay's assassination in 1406. The castle was designed in the then-common style of a large cube, serving both residential and defensive purposes. In 1482, the fortress successfully withstood a citizens' uprising against the bishop. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in March 1536, the castle passed into Bernese possession, with its structure remaining largely unchanged. It was not until 1789 that the bailiff added two stories to the adjacent building.
