Château Saint-Maurice

The castle was built by the Counts of Savoy in the 13th century. During the 15th century, the castle was abandoned and deserted. At the end of the 15th century, under the rule of Bishop Jost von Silenen, the castle was rebuilt and established as a bailiwick seat. The castle was rebuilt several times (1523 and 1693) and extended (the round tower in 1830, outbuildings in 1843). Today, the castle is used as a museum ("Musée militaire cantonal"). Unfortunately, the area around the castle is heavily disfigured by modern interventions (railway, main road, military buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries).
