Châteaux d'Uzès
The Châteaux d'Uzès, also known as Le Duché, is an 11th-century castle complex in the medieval town of Uzès in the French Gard department.
History+
Even in Gallo-Roman times, a Roman military camp existed at the highest point of Uzès. In the 11th century, with the advent of feudalism, Elzéart d’Uzès founded the lordship of Uzès. On the site of the former castrum, the fortified town and its castle were built. In the 12th century, Bermond I of Uzès had the 42-meter-high keep, the Tour Bermonde, erected. The complex also includes a stately residence with a 16th-century Renaissance facade, thousand-year-old cellars, and a flamboyant Gothic castle chapel from the 16th century, whose roof is covered with Burgundian glazed tiles. In 1565, King Charles IX elevated Uzès to a duchy and appointed Antoine de Crussol as the first duke.
