History+

The history of Chatsworth House began in 1549 when Bess of Hardwick and Sir William Cavendish acquired the estate and started building the first house on the site in 1552. Of this early construction phase, only the Hunting Tower remains today. The current building, in the English Baroque style, was erected between 1686 and 1707 under William Cavendish, the 1st Duke of Devonshire. Numerous European artists contributed to its design.
