History+

The origins of Chester Castle date back to the 10th century, when a Saxon fortification stood on this site. Following the Norman Conquest of England, Hugh d’Avranches, the first Earl of Chester, had a motte built around 1069/70. The castle served as a base for further conquest and secured the bridge over the River Dee. In the 12th century, the wooden tower was replaced by the stone Flag Tower.
