Kreuzherrenkloster

The origins of the monastery, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, date back to the 13th century. It was probably founded around 1210 by the Staufer imperial Vogt, Count Heinrich von Neuffen-Weißenhorn, and his wife Hedwig. They established a hospital on the eastern edge of the city center and handed it over to the Hospital Order of the Canons Regular of the Holy Spirit from Rome. The order focused on caring for the sick and homeless, as well as taking in pregnant women and foundlings. After a fire in 1223, a reconstruction took place, during which the monastery was first mentioned in a city document. From 1353, the city council participated in the administration of the hospital, which was divided in 1365 into an upper hospital run by the order and a municipal lower hospital. Another fire in 1477 necessitated a further reconstruction, during which the hospital church was rebuilt between 1480 and 1484 as a Gothic hall church. A tower was added in 1484. Between 1709 and 1711, the church underwent a Baroque renovation with stucco by Matthias and Michael Stiller and ceiling paintings by Johann Friedrich Sichelbein. Following the mediatization of Memmingen and its transfer to Bavaria in 1802, the monastery was secularized. Its assets were auctioned off in 1803, and the last canons left the building in 1804. The church initially served as a timber warehouse, later as a goods hall, and underwent extensive alterations. In the 20th century, the building was used as a market and customs office before partly serving as an exhibition and concert hall from 1947. From 1998 to 2003, the complex was extensively renovated and restored in accordance with monument preservation guidelines.

The former Canons' Monastery is located in the city of Memmingen in the Swabia administrative region of Bavaria, Germany.

Following extensive renovation and restoration between 1998 and 2003, the church space is now once again used as an exhibition and concert hall. Various municipal institutions are housed in the convent building.
