Christchurch Castle

The Castle can be visited

In the English town of Christchurch lies the ruin of Christchurch Castle. The remains of the keep and the Constable's House show a Norman complex, strategically located within a rectangular moat.

History+

The castle's origins date back to around 1100, when Richard de Redvers, a companion of William the Conqueror, received an estate in Christchurch and possibly built an initial motte. Around 1160, the complex was expanded in stone. In 1147, the castle faced an attack by supporters of King Stephen, as the de Redvers family supported Queen Matilda. For approximately 150 years, it served as the de Redvers' ancestral seat before passing to various figures, including two English kings.
