Clarissenkloster (Einbeck)

The exact founding date of the Clarissenkloster is not recorded, but the first documentary mention dates back to 1471. Originally founded as a Beguine convent, the nuns soon adopted the rules of Saints Francis and Clare. The monastery, also known as “Süsterhus des heiligen Cruces,” was dedicated to the Holy Cross. The sisters were only allowed to use their own chapel from 1489, having previously attended the market church. It was led by a Mater under the supervision of a Franciscan provincial. Its possessions included a garden and a courtyard, as well as capital with the Hildesheim treasury. The nuns were known for their education, copied books, and engaged in charitable work. After the Reformation, the Clarisses were granted lifelong residency rights. The monastery was rebuilt after the city fire of 1540 and was finally dissolved and privatized in 1582, following the death of the last nun.

The Clarissenkloster is located on Maschenstraße in the southwestern part of the old town of Einbeck, a city in the Northeim region, Lower Saxony, Germany.

Of the original monastery complex, a massive fire wall remains today, measuring 19.5 meters long, 8.7 meters high, and 1.3 meters thick. This wall dates from the reconstruction after the city fire of 1549. Other components included a collapsed cellar and the stone lower floors of a southern annex, which possibly served as a chapel, archive, or latrine. Today, a part of the building houses a café.
