History+

The Claydon House estate served the Verney family as a country seat since after 1620. The current building was constructed between 1757 and 1771 on the foundations of a previous structure. Ralph, the 2nd Earl Verney, was inspired by the nearby Stowe House for the new building and commissioned architect Sir Thomas Robinson for the design. Construction, which began in 1768, was managed until 1771 by Luke Lightfoot, a stonemason and woodcarver.
