History+

The estate's history is marked by several reconstructions. The first building, dating from 1666, was destroyed by fire in 1795. A second house, built in 1824, met a similar fate in 1849 due to a fire. The current, listed building was constructed in 1851 by architect Charles Barry for George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, the 2nd Duke of Sutherland. Cliveden House served as the residence for various nobles, including an Earl, three Countesses, two Dukes, and a Prince of Wales, before passing into the possession of the Viscounts Astor.
