History+
The origins of the castle date back to 1625, when Laurence Esmonde, later Baron Esmonde, had a fortified tower house built as a garrison. The location of the village of Clonegal on the road between Dublin and Wexford played a role during Cromwell's conquest of Ireland. In 1650, it was captured by Oliver Cromwell on his march to Kilkenny. The castle later served as a setting for Stanley Kubrick's film “Barry Lyndon”. Since 1976, the basement of the estate has housed the religious community “Fellowship of Isis”. In August 2008, the Solas Festival took place here.
