Clough Castle
Clough Castle is the ruin of an Anglo-Norman motte with a kidney-shaped bailey, located in Clough, County Down, Northern Ireland. This historic site once served as a strategic point to secure access to the Lecale Peninsula and is now a freely accessible testament to medieval fortification architecture.
History+
The construction of Clough Castle took place during the Anglo-Norman conquest of Northern Ireland, likely before or during the reign of King John Lackland (1199-1216). Originally, the complex consisted of an almost eight-meter-high artificial mound that supported a wooden palisade and a tower. In the 15th century, a residential tower, a stone house, and a hall were built on the edge of the mound. The latter probably burned down due to its thatched roof. The motte was surrounded by a moat about two meters deep, and a wooden bridge likely connected the motte and the bailey. Together with Dundrum Castle to the southwest, Clough Castle formed an important military outpost on Dundrum Bay, which served as a supply port for troops during the conquest of Ireland.
