In the English county of Essex, Colchester Castle was built on the remains of a Roman Temple of Claudius. Its massive construction and historical significance make it an outstanding example of Norman architecture in Great Britain.

History+

The fortress was constructed between 1070 and 1100, rising on the foundations of a Roman Temple of Claudius. Its design, particularly the keep, was inspired by the Tower of London. A partial demolition of the complex occurred in the late 17th century, but in the 18th century, a landscaped park was created around the remaining structures. Since 1922, the castle complex and park have been owned by the town of Colchester and are open to the public.
