Colombi Castle

Between 1859 and 1861, the Colombischlösschen was erected on the site of the former Bastion Saint Louis of Freiburg's city fortifications. This area had previously been filled with 15 meters of earth and transformed into a garden. Countess Maria Antonia Gertrudis von Zea Bermudez y Colombi commissioned the construction as her widow's residence. The designs in Gothic Tudor style were provided by the Freiburg architect Georg Jakob Schneider, inspired by his teacher Friedrich Eisenlohr. The costs amounted to approximately 300,000 Goldmark. After the Countess's death, the manufacturer Johann Georg Thoma acquired the property, converted parts into building land, and laid out Colombistraße and Rosastraße.
