Conwy Castle

The Castle can be visited

Conwy Castle is the ruin of a medieval fortress in Wales, overlooking the mouth of the River Conwy. As part of a chain of defensive structures built by King Edward I in Wales, it stands out for its size and the architectural signature of its master builder, James of St. George.

History+

The construction of Conwy Castle took place between 1283 and 1287, by order of Edward I. It was the first of nine castles the king had built in Wales to consolidate his rule. The planning and execution were entrusted to James of St. George, an architect of defensive structures of his time. The castle served as a replacement for Deganwy Castle of Henry III of England, which had been destroyed by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1263.
