Couvent des Augustins

To be privately owned

The Augustinian Monastery in Mortemart, a historic edifice, rises in the French region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Originally conceived as a fortress, it was transformed into a monastic complex and continues to shape the image of the commune today.

History+

The origins of the Augustinian Monastery date back to the Middle Ages, when it initially served as a fortress. In the 16th century, the building underwent a renovation that gave it its Renaissance facade. During the Thirty Years' War, it was severely damaged but subsequently rebuilt. In the 18th century, the monastery was redesigned by the architect Joseph Brousseau and served as the seat for the last canons of Mortemart.
