In the Scottish Lowlands, Crawford Priory is the ruin of a former mansion and estate. Originally built in the 18th century, it underwent an extensive Gothic Revival transformation in the early 19th century, giving it its distinctive appearance today.

History+

The origins of Crawford Priory date back to 1758 when the 21st Earl of Crawford had the estate built. Between 1809 and 1811, the mansion underwent a profound transformation. Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford initially commissioned David Hamilton, and later James Gillespie Graham, for the redesign in the Gothic Revival style. Graham's design leaned even more heavily on ecclesiastical Gothic forms. After Lady Mary's death in 1833, the estate passed to the Earls of Glasgow. In 1871, a chapel was added to the east side.
