The ruin of a former Benedictine monastery, Crossraguel Abbey, is situated near Maybole in South Ayrshire, Scotland.

History+

It is believed that the site of Crossraguel may have held Christian significance as early as the 4th century, possibly named after a cross of Regulus, a Greek monk. Between 1214 and 1216, Donnchadh, the Earl of Carrick, granted the lands to Paisley Abbey, leading to the initial construction of a small oratory. A dispute between the Earl and the monks in 1244 resulted in the Bishop of Glasgow's directive to establish a daughter monastery at Crossraguel. The first abbot was appointed in 1286.
