Curia Iulia

The Curia Iulia can be visited

The Curia Iulia once served as the meeting place for the Senate. It is located in ancient Rome.

History+

Construction of the Curia Iulia was initiated by Julius Caesar, but it was only completed under Emperor Augustus in 29 BC. It was partly built on the foundations of the Curia Cornelia, which in turn had been erected on the remains of the Curia Hostilia. The Curia Iulia provided direct access to the adjacent Caesar Forum. After a fire in 283 AD, the building was reconstructed under Emperor Diocletian. Between 1932 and 1937, the Curia Iulia underwent restoration to reconstruct its Diocletianic appearance. Its current state is due to its transformation into the Church of S. Adriano in the 7th century AD, which contributed to its preservation.
