Cyriacuskloster Naumburg

The monastery was first mentioned in 1035 in connection with a donation. Until 1086, the priory was in imperial possession before Emperor Henry IV transferred it to Bishop Huzman of Speyer. This connection to a name ending in "-burg" and the imperial donation led to speculation about a former castle complex, but concrete evidence for this is lacking. The monastery remained in the possession of the Speyer bishops until 1146. After its destruction and abandonment, it was handed over to the important Limburg Monastery on the Haardt in 1146. The small Naumburg Monastery was usually staffed with only a few Benedictine monks. It initially had a chapel, which later remained as the Chapel of Our Lady after the monastery church was built. The patrons of the monastery were Saint Cyriacus and the Holy Cross, and it housed relics, including a supposed piece of Jesus' cross. The monks often came from local noble or wealthy bourgeois families, whose donations secured the monastery's existence. In the late Middle Ages, the monastery increasingly became the focus of competing territorial lordships, the Burgraviate of Friedberg and the County of Hanau. In 1504, the monastery was destroyed in the Landshut War of Succession. Reconstruction took place with the support of the Benedictine Abbey of Seligenstadt, as the mother monastery of Limburg was also destroyed. However, the reconstruction required the sale of monastic property. Monastic life was already in decline at this time, which was further intensified by the Reformation.

The former Cyriacus Monastery Naumburg is located in the Main-Kinzig district in Hesse, Germany, near Nidderau-Erbstadt in the Wetterau region.

The former monastery developed into today's Naumburg Castle, which continues to shape the historic site.
