On St. Michael's Isle off the coast of the Isle of Man is Derby Fort, a 17th-century fortification. This stronghold was built to protect the port of Derbyhaven.
History+
The fort was constructed in 1645 under the patronage of James Stanley, the 7th Earl of Derby and Lord of Mann. Its construction occurred during the English Civil War, a period of political and military unrest, when the protection of important ports was crucial.

Derby Fort is located on St. Michael's Isle, a small island belonging to the Isle of Man, a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom. The site is situated at an elevation of approximately 16 meters above sea level and can be found at the eastern end of the island.
