Deutschhaus Chruch

The Gothic Deutschhauskirche was built between 1270 and 1320 as the church of the Teutonic Order. In 1694, Antonio Petrini converted the convent building and the lower floors of the tower in Baroque style. Five stucco ceilings, preserved from that period and crafted in the then-common acanthus style, also date from this time. The church fell to the state in 1805 during secularization, was used for a long time as a military magazine, and, after the Protestant community of Würzburg had already tried in vain in 1872, was handed over to the Protestant church in 1922, consecrated in 1923, and its associated parish established in 1925. Notable artworks include "The Adoration of the Magi" by Rudolf Schäfer, "The Listening Christ" by Wilhelm Steinhausen, and "The Annunciation to Mary" by Georg Anton Urlaub. The interior is bright and elaborately decorated. The church survived the bombing raids on Würzburg without major damage (services could be held there again from spring 1946) and is now a protected monument. During its use as a military magazine, ceilings were installed, destroying large parts of the interior decoration. A historical document inside the church shows old pictures of the church, a Teutonic Knight, the "Schöne Pforte" (Beautiful Gate), and a floor plan. The former monastery church – of the Teutonic Order monastery, now the Evangelical-Lutheran Deutschhauskirche (parish church) – is a single-nave building with a gabled roof, buttresses, tracery windows, and a tympanum portal, as well as a vaulted street overpass, Gothic, 1260–1296, with a lateral square tower with sandstone articulation, first half of the 13th century, and a slate-covered Baroque onion dome with lantern, 17th/18th century; with furnishings. In the church, there are still 13 tombstones of members of the Teutonic Order Commandery, all placed under the gallery.

The church features an organ by the Dresden organ building company Jehmlich.
