Deutschordenskommende Brackel

The first documented mention of the Brackel Commandery dates back to 1290, confirming its foundation around that time. It was dedicated to Saint Clement and belonged to the Teutonic Order, a significant medieval knightly order. The commandery was part of the Bailiwick of Westphalia and, together with the associated patron church of St. Johannes Chapel, formed the historical core of today's Dortmund district of Brackel. In 1809, the commandery was dissolved and secularized by Napoleon. Subsequently, it initially fell to the Grand Duchy of Berg and later, in 1815, to Prussia.

The former monastery is located in the city of Dortmund, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

After secularization and various changes of ownership, the commandery was donated to the Archdiocese of Paderborn in 1946. In 1949, the archdiocese established the Sozialinstitut Kommende Dortmund there. Today, the building is listed as a historical monument in the monument register of the city of Dortmund.
