The Teutonic Order, founded by crusaders from Bremen and Lübeck during the Siege of Acre (1189–1191), established a commandery in Bremen as early as 1230. Here, the small, single-nave Elisabeth Church with two bays and an attached order house were built near the hospital. The existing Holy Spirit Hospital was taken over by the Order and subsequently referred to as the 'Deutsches Haus'. Hospital operations ceased in 1426, and the house was last mentioned in 1519. Komturstraße still commemorates the former location of the complex. In 1234, the knights of the Order participated in the crusade against the Stedinger. The Bremen commandery was staffed by only a few friars and one to two priests and evolved over time into a prosperous economic enterprise. A prominent commander was Jasper von Münchhausen, who held office multiple times and was involved in various controversies, including accusations of arson and robbery. During the Uprising of the 104 Men in 1531, the then-commander Rolf von Bardewisch was murdered, and the commandery was plundered. After the Reformation, Franz von Dumstorp became commander in 1532. The commandery was mortgaged to Bremen in 1563 and acquired by the city in 1564, ending its existence as an Order establishment. Dumstorp managed the property until his death in 1583. From 1598, parts of the commandery were used as Bremen's main stable. Later, from 1674, the church served as a warehouse and packing house, with intermediate floors installed and the choir modified for loading purposes. During World War II, the deconsecrated church remained largely undamaged but was in poor condition. As part of the city center's reconstruction, the upper church was demolished to make way for a new district court building. The lower church was preserved and has housed a restaurant since 1976.

The Teutonic Order Commandery in Bremen was located in the Old Town of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, in the federal state of Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany.

Today, only the lower church of the former Teutonic Order Commandery remains, which has been used as a restaurant since 1976. The complex is a protected monument.
