Deutschordenskommende Eschenbach

The exact founding date of the Eschenbach Commandery is not recorded, but a Teutonic Order house in Eschenbach is first mentioned in writing in 1236. Originally a donation from the Counts of Wertheim an der Tauber, the order gradually acquired the entire town of Eschenbach and extensive possessions in the surrounding area during the 13th century. In 1253, a commander and six order brothers from Eschenbach first appeared in documents, replacing an existing 12th-century church with a larger new building. Between 1306 and 1315, the commandery lost its independence and was annexed to the Teutonic Order Commandery of Nuremberg, which subsequently administered Eschenbach through a bailiff. In 1332, the Franconian bailiwick, under Landkomtur Heinrich von Zipplingen, received the Weissenburg town rights for Eschenbach from Emperor Louis the Bavarian, which included fortification rights, market privileges, and high jurisdiction. The walling of Eschenbach was completed by 1440. King Charles IV renewed this grant in 1347. In 1623, the Teutonic Order Castle was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in the town center. As part of administrative reforms of the order in the late 18th century, when the Franconian order province was united with the Deutschmeister territory, the Eschenbach office was assigned to the Ellingen Oberamt. The dissolution of the Teutonic Order in all states of the Confederation of the Rhine, and thus also in Eschenbach, occurred by a decree of Napoleon I on April 24, 1809.
