Deutschordenskommende Mainau

The origins of the Teutonic Order Commandery Mainau date back to 1271, when the Teutonic Order founded a settlement at this strategically important location. As a commandery, it served as an administrative and economic hub for the order, playing a significant role in regional development. Over the centuries, the monastery underwent various transformations and expansions, underscoring its importance as both a spiritual and secular center.

The former monastery is located on Mainau Island in Lake Constance, which belongs to the city of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg. This unique island setting provided both protection and a picturesque environment, and remains a defining characteristic of the site to this day.

Today, the Teutonic Order Commandery Mainau is an integral part of Mainau Island, famously known as the 'Flower Island'. The historic buildings are preserved and integrated into the current use of the area, bearing witness to the long and eventful history of the site.
