Deutschordenskommende Mergentheim

The commandery was founded in 1219 when the nobleman Andreas von Hohenlohe joined the Teutonic Order. He transferred his possessions in Mergentheim, including two castles, to the Order, a transaction confirmed by Emperor Frederick II. The Hohenlohe family continued to actively support the Order, and Mergentheim served as a 'house commandery,' allowing the noble lineage to provide for family members and preserve the family's endowed property. Throughout the 13th century, several members of the Hohenlohe family held leading positions within the Teutonic Order. In 1269, the Order acquired another castle from the Hohenlohe family, which evolved into the preferred residence of the Deutschmeister. Following the Reformation and the destruction of Horneck Castle during the Peasants' War in 1525, the moated castle in Mergentheim became the main seat of the Teutonic Order in the southwest. From 1527 until 1809, Mergentheim remained the Order's central stronghold, hosting important figures such as emperors and princes. The commandery was eventually dissolved in 1809.

The former monastery was situated in Mergentheim, now Bad Mergentheim, in the Main-Tauber district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 214 m above sea level.

The commandery was dissolved in 1809. The former buildings and facilities are now part of the Deutschordensschloss Mergentheim, which reflects the history of the Order in the region.
