Muffendorf Castle

The estate's origins date back to a Carolingian royal villa, part of whose property passed to the Cologne church. Archbishop Anno II donated the estate to Siegburg Monastery. In 1254, Abbot Gottfried of Siegburg transferred a portion to the Teutonic Order Commandery of Ramersdorf. Due to growing possessions, Ramersdorf sold the Muffendorf estate to the Bailiwick of Koblenz in 1304, which then founded its own commandery in Muffendorf. In the 15th century, the commandery fell into a crisis and had to sell parts of its property, including the building, to the Brigittine Monastery Marienforst in 1458, but by 1496 it was fully back in the Order's possession. A decline in the 17th century led to the decay of the buildings and administration by the Waldbreitbach Commandery. In 1713, a commander was reappointed. Under Baron von Harff and Karl Adolf Freiherr von Greiffenklau, a new Baroque commandery house with a chapel and servants' quarters was built in the mid-18th century.
