The Teutonic Order Commandry of St. Ägid (St. Gilgen) in Regensburg was a significant monastery of the Teutonic Order, located in the city center of Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. This historic complex, now a protected architectural monument, bears witness to a long and eventful history and represents an important cultural heritage of the region.
History+
The Commandry of St. Ägid was founded in 1210 by Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria. This made it the first commandry of the Teutonic Order in Bavaria and the first bailiwick of the later Franconian Bailiwick. Its establishment was made possible by the donation of buildings from the former burgraves of Regensburg, which Duke Ludwig I had acquired after the extinction of the Babonen family. Over the centuries, the commandry acquired extensive possessions, including church patronages and manors, which secured its economic foundation. In the 13th century, the number of order brothers fluctuated between four and seven. In 1368, a 'Seelhaus' with eight nuns was established, serving the care of the poor and sick. A hospice is also documented from this time. The commandry survived the Reformation period but was dissolved in 1809.
