In Bad Mergentheim in the Main-Tauber district of Baden-Württemberg stands Deutschordensschloss Mergentheim, a former moated castle. It gained significance as the headquarters of the Teutonic Order for several centuries.

History+

The origins of the castle date back to the 13th century, when it came into the possession of the Teutonic Order in 1219 through a donation from the brothers Heinrich, Andreas, and Friedrich von Hohenlohe. Initially used as a commandery, the complex developed from 1527 onwards into the seat of the Deutschmeister and later also of the Grand Master.
