St. Marien Cathedral
St. Mary's Cathedral in Wurzen, a Protestant cathedral, is an architectural monument in Saxony. It was originally built as a collegiate church and received its current designation as a cathedral after the bishops of Meissen moved their residence to the neighboring Wurzen Castle in the late 15th century. Since the Reformation, it has served as a Protestant place of worship and is known for its acoustics, making it a venue for sacred music concerts.

The cathedral's history begins with the consecration of its predecessor on August 16, 1114, by Bishop Herwig of Meissen, who dedicated the church to the Virgin Mary and simultaneously founded the collegiate chapter of Wurzen. Originally a Romanesque pillar basilica, the church underwent numerous extensions and alterations. Between 1260 and 1290, the east choir was added, followed by the vaulting of the nave and the expansion of the south aisle in the 14th century. After a fire in 1470, the cathedral was rebuilt and further expanded under Bishop Johann VI von Saalhausen around 1500, including the construction of the west choir and the extension of the east choir. With the relocation of the bishop's residence to Wurzen Castle, the church was elevated to a cathedral.
