Cathedral St. Marien Fürstenwalde

The origins of St. Mary's Cathedral date back to 1230. From 1385, the city church functioned as the cathedral and bishop's seat of the Diocese of Lebus. After its destruction by the Hussites in 1432, reconstruction as a cathedral began in 1446. In 1528, the cathedral was plundered by robber knights. With the death of the last Catholic bishop in 1555, the Catholic era ended, and the first Protestant service took place in 1557. A comprehensive Baroque renovation occurred in 1771, but this was reversed between 1908 and 1910 to restore the building's Gothic character. Towards the end of World War II, the cathedral was almost completely destroyed in 1945 by air raids and artillery shelling. Reconstruction by the Evangelical community lasted into the 1970s, with the interior deliberately designed to leave traces of the destruction visible as a reminder. Full reconstruction was completed in 1995.

St. Mary's Cathedral is situated in Fürstenwalde/Spree, a town in the Oder-Spree district in eastern Brandenburg, Germany.

Today, St. Mary's Cathedral serves as an Evangelical parish church and an active community center. The building presents itself as a three-nave cathedral church made of unplastered brick. Inside, there is a wood-paneled vault and asymmetrical hexagonal support pillars. Particularly noteworthy are a twelve-meter-high, filigree sacrament house made of sandstone from 1517 and the tomb of Bishop Dietrich von Bülow from 1523. The 68-meter-high west tower is plastered in white and flanked by two smaller stair towers.
