St. Peter's Cathedral in Bautzen is a simultaneous church and ranks among the oldest and largest of its kind in Germany. It is located in the old town of Bautzen and shapes the cityscape. Its dual confessional use makes it a building in Saxony.

History+

Around the year 1000, a first parish church was erected on this site by Count Eido von Rochlitz. The collegiate church of St. Peter was founded around 1217/1218, and the choir of the new building was consecrated on June 24, 1221. Elements such as the west portal are still preserved from this early construction phase. The cathedral received its current form around 1430, before a fourth nave was added to the south between 1456 and 1463. After a city fire in 1634, the interior was redesigned in Baroque style, and the tower received a Baroque dome in 1664.
