History+
The origins of Augsburg Cathedral date back to the 8th century, with foundations from the 4th century indicating an earlier Christian presence. The first verifiable cathedral buildings were constructed under Bishops Wikterp and Sintpert, with the episcopal church consecrated in 805. After damage from the Hungarian invasions in the 10th century and a collapse of the western structure in 994, Bishop Liutold began reconstruction, which was completed around 1006 and forms the core of today's cathedral. Further alterations followed in the 11th century under Bishops Heinrich II and Embriko. From 1331, the Romanesque building was extended in the Gothic style, and Bishop Markward laid the foundation stone for the east choir in 1356, which was only completed in 1431.
