Dom St. Peter und Paul Bardowick

The Bardowick Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul is a remarkable Gothic hall church located in the municipality of Bardowick, Lower Saxony. This three-nave edifice is characterized by its brick architecture and two squat, octagonal towers that define its appearance. Although referred to as a “Cathedral,” this church was never a bishop's seat, but always functioned as a collegiate church.
History+
The church's origins trace back to a predecessor building, documented as early as 1146 as a collegiate church of a mission cell from Amorbach Monastery. Following the destruction of Bardowick in 1189 by Henry the Lion, the original wooden structure suffered significant damage. A papal document from 1194 confirms this destruction. Today, only spolia from the Romanesque predecessor building remain in the western St. Stephen's Chapel and the towers, including ashlar from Lüneburg's Schiltstein. Funding for a new building was secured through indulgences from 1236 and a chapter resolution from 1381. The two unusually low brick towers were erected around 1300. Construction of the current cathedral began in 1389 with the choir and continued until 1485. Dendrochronological investigations date the roof truss to 1405 and 1428 respectively. The choir stalls were completed in 1487. The collegiate foundation continued to exist even after the Reformation but was dissolved in 1850, and its assets were managed by the Klosterkammer Hannover.
