Eichstätt Cathedral

The origins of the cathedral date back to the 8th century, when Saint Willibald erected a first stone church here. Following the destruction of the associated missionary monastery by Hungarian incursions, Bishop Reginold had a circular building with towers and a crypt erected over the ruins in the 10th century. In the 11th century, a Romanesque cathedral was built under Bishops Heribert and Gundekar II, with its nave and choir consecrated in 1060. From 1256, the Early Gothic construction phase began with the west choir, followed by the High Gothic hall under Bishops Raban Truchseß von Wilburgstetten and Friedrich IV von Oettingen. The Late Gothic period brought additions such as the Chapter Sacristy and the cloister with the mortuary. The Baroque west facade was completed in 1718 by Gabriel de Gabrieli, followed by further Baroque furnishings in the 18th century. In the 19th century, efforts were made to restore the cathedral to its medieval appearance, leading to extensive renovations that continued into the early 20th century. The 20th century saw further restorations that shaped the cathedral's current appearance, including the removal of the choir screens in the 1970s.
