Gothenburg Cathedral

In the heart of the Swedish city of Gothenburg stands the Gothenburg Cathedral, a significant sacred building and the bishop's church of the Diocese of Gothenburg. This imposing structure is already the third cathedral on this historic site and bears witness to a eventful past.
History+
The first cathedral on this site was consecrated in 1633 and dedicated to the memory of King Gustav II Adolf, who had fallen shortly before in the Battle of Lützen. However, after both this first building and a subsequent one fell victim to fires, construction of the current cathedral began in 1804. The foundations of the previous church could be reused, although the current floor plan does not correspond to the old one in all parts. The designs came from the architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg, whose work was completed after his death by his student Justus F. Weinberg. The inauguration by Bishop Johan Wingård took place on May 21, 1815, although the cathedral was not yet fully completed at that time. The tower was consecrated only a decade later, and its completion took another two years. Over time, the cathedral was restored several times, namely in 1904, from 1954 to 1957, and again from 1983 to 1985.
