Kalmar Cathedral is a significant sacred building in the southern Swedish city of Kalmar. It stands as a prominent example of Baroque church architecture, designed as the central feature of a newly planned city.
History+
Construction of the cathedral began in 1660 under King Charles X Gustav. In the mid-17th century, the city of Kalmar had been relocated to Kvarnholmen island for strategic reasons and re-planned with a strict orthogonal layout. The cathedral was intended to form the focal point of the main square. The building work, based on designs by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, continued under King Charles XI after the death of Charles X Gustav. The solemn inauguration finally took place in 1703 under King Charles XII. The cathedral served as the main church of the Lutheran Diocese of Kalmar.
