Linköping Cathedral

The cathedral's origins trace back to the first half of the 12th century, when a Romanesque stone basilica was erected on this site. Archaeological discoveries in the 20th century uncovered the foundations of this original church, which occupied about half of the current cathedral's footprint. Even during that period, Linköping was mentioned as a bishop's seat. Construction of the present cathedral began around 1230, with its completion spanning over 250 years due to numerous expansions and alterations. While the oldest sections still exhibit Romanesque features, the nave and choir are Gothic in style. Particularly striking is the stylistic transition in the south aisle, where Romanesque round arches give way to Gothic pointed arches. In the 15th century, the choir and the polygonal east tower were built under the direction of Cologne master builders Gierlach and Adam von Düren, a influence reflected in many of the stonework details. The west tower was constructed between 1747 and 1758 and later underwent a Neo-Gothic redesign by architect Helgo Zettervall in the second half of the 19th century. The medieval stone sculptures are largely preserved, with only the sculptures around the main portal dating from the 19th century.
