Mariestad Cathedral
In the city of Mariestad, Mariestad Cathedral rises as an example of late Gothic architecture in Sweden. It is one of the last Gothic churches in the country built without later historicizing or romantic influences.
History+
The city of Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl. Just two years later, Mariestad developed into a center of the Reformation and the seat of the superintendent for Värmland and Västergötland. This led to the commencement of construction of a cathedral in the Gothic style in 1593. The church was designed with a single, wide nave, which was better suited to the requirements of Reformation preaching. Following a fire in 1693, the current pulpit and altar were created anew. Although Mariestad is no longer a bishop's see today, the edifice continues to be referred to as a cathedral.
