The Mariestad Cathedral is one of the last Gothic churches in Sweden built without historicizing or romantic intentions.
Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Duke Karl. As Mariestad became the seat of the superintendent over Värmland and Västergötland and an important center of the Reformation just two years later, construction of a cathedral in traditional Gothic style began in 1593. However, the cathedral consists only of a wide nave, which seemed better suited for the sermons of the Reformation. The current pulpit and altar were created after a fire in 1693. Although Mariestad is no longer a bishop's seat today, the church is still referred to as a cathedral.
