Skara Cathedral

The origins of the cathedral extend far back, as the Diocese of Skara was founded in 1014 under King Olof Skötkonung, making it the oldest in Sweden. Construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century, built from hewn sandstone in the Gothic style. Despite later alterations, the cathedral still retains significant parts of its medieval layout and masonry. During restoration work between 1947 and 1949, a well-preserved 12th-century crypt was uncovered. Further renovation in 1999 revealed older stone remnants.
