Verden cathedral

The cathedral's history begins with a Carolingian church around 814, which became a bishop's seat in 849. After a fire, a new wooden structure was built, to which Bishop Bernhard II added a stone tower around 1000. Under Bishop Wigger in the early 11th century, the first stone basilica, constructed from bog iron ore and boulders, was erected and consecrated to Saints Mary and Cecilia in 1028. The 12th century saw a renovation using brick, with Bishop Hermann overseeing the construction of the Romanesque bell tower and initiating a cruciform basilica, completed between 1181 and 1185 under Bishop Tammo. A fire in 1268 destroyed the Romanesque basilica. Construction of the current High Gothic hall church began in 1290 under Bishop Konrad I and progressed slowly over long periods, finally concluding in 1490 with a provisional western gable. After the introduction of the Lutheran church order around 1560, the cathedral served the prince-bishops and, following the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, became part of the Duchy of Verden. A comprehensive renovation in 1829 removed Baroque and Renaissance elements in favor of a Regothicization.

Today, the cathedral houses the Evangelical-Lutheran cathedral parish in Verden and is a protected architectural monument in Lower Saxony. The structure is largely made of brick, with the Romanesque tower's lower section of sandstone ashlar preserved. The tower features a tent roof, which was added after the destruction of the original pointed spire in 1737. The transept gables display elements of North German Brick Gothic.
