Adelhausen monastery

The establishment of Adelhausen Convent in 1687 resulted from the amalgamation of initially four Dominican convents, with a fifth joining in 1786. These five precursor monasteries were originally situated outside the city walls of Freiburg. The Convent of the Annunciation of Mary was founded in 1234 in the village of Adelhausen, now part of the Wiehre district. While legend attributes its foundation to high nobility, it was likely established by the Freiburg citizen Heinrich Vasser. In the early 14th century, it flourished under Prioress Anna von Munzingen, who compiled a book of sisters' lives detailing the mystical gifts of nuns. The Convent of Mary Magdalene, also known as the Convent of Repentant Women, was founded before 1250 in the Predigervorstadt and initially aimed at the conversion of fallen and morally endangered women, before being incorporated into the Dominican Order. The Convent of St. Agnes was established in 1264 in the Lehener Vorstadt. A detailed description after its destruction in 1644 reveals an extensive complex with gardens, outbuildings, and a large dormitory. The Convent of St. Catherine (of Alexandria) was founded in 1297 in the village of Wiehre. Finally, the Convent of St. Catherine of Siena or St. Catharina von Senis auf dem Graben was founded in 1419, also in the Predigervorstadt.

The former Dominican convent of Adelhausen is located in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 282 m above sea level.

The former convent church of the Dominican convent of Adelhausen continues to be used today as the Adelhauser Church of the Annunciation of Mary and St. Catherine. The other premises of the convent served as schools after secularization and now house museums and offices.
