Dominikanerinnen Abbey Heilig Grab

The Heilig Grab convent was founded in 1365. Throughout its history, it suffered severe damage on several occasions, including during the Hussite invasion in 1430, in the Peasants' War in 1626, and in the Thirty Years' War. The convent was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization. The convent church was subsequently used for military purposes, and the convent buildings, which had served as a hospital, were demolished around 1874. After a restoration of the convent church in 1923, the convent was re-established in 1926 by Dominican nuns from Augsburg and was again elevated to an independent priory in 1930. The tradition of weaving and embroidery, established in the 15th century, was revived by the nuns in 1926. A well-known tapestry in the funeral hall of the Bamberg cemetery was created by the nuns based on a design by Alfred Heinz Kettmann.

The convent is located in the city of Bamberg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 244 meters above sea level.

The convent church, built in a single-nave style with a light-filled choir and a wooden gallery in the west, has housed the tomb of the lay sister Maria Columba Schonath in its southern side chapel since 1787. Parts of the original furnishings can now be found in St. Gangolf Church and the Diocesan Museum in Bamberg.
