Kloster Lambrecht (Pfalz)

The foundation of St. Lambrecht Monastery took place in 977 by the Salian Count Otto of Worms, who endowed it in honor of Saint Lambert of Liège. Initially established as a Benedictine monastery in a secluded forest valley, it developed under the protection of the Salian ruling family. In 1065, Henry IV transferred the monastery to Speyer Cathedral for financial endowment, leading to a redirection of income. Nevertheless, the convent initially continued to flourish, and archaeological finds attest to a cruciform basilica from that period. In the early 12th century, however, the Benedictine convent lost significance and fell into financial difficulties. To save the monastery, Bishop Konrad von Eberstein replaced the Benedictines with Dominican nuns in 1244, a change confirmed by Pope Innocent IV. Under the new leadership, the monastery experienced a resurgence and became the wealthiest Dominican convent in the region. During this heyday, the magnificent convent church was built, its interior elaborately decorated with secco paintings under Prioress Kunigunde von Fleckenstein. These artworks were later whitewashed during the Reformation but were uncovered and restored in the 20th century, with depictions of the plague patron St. Quirinus, the church patron St. Lambert, and a depiction of Mary with Prioress Kunigunde being among the highlights.

The Dominican convent of Lambrecht is located in the town of Lambrecht in southern Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

The preserved convent church now serves as the Protestant parish church of the community and is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture, protected as a cultural monument. The uncovered and restored medieval paintings are a special attraction.
