Kloster Löwental

The Löwental convent was founded in 1250 by the imperial ministerialis Johannes von Ravensburg-Löwental, who donated his castle Eichstegen-Löwental to the Dominican nuns of Constance and joined the order himself. Initially named "Himmelwonne," the name Löwental was established by 1253. In 1260, the convent received additional possessions through donations from Counts Rudolf and Gottfried von Habsburg-Laufenburg. Over the centuries, the convent suffered several destructions by fires, notably in 1304, 1609, and during the Thirty Years' War, but was always rebuilt. A Baroque church was consecrated in 1687. Until its secularization in 1806, the convent's assets grew steadily, particularly due to a thriving pharmacy. After the dissolution of the convent by Württemberg in 1806 and the expulsion of the nuns in 1812, when a barracks was established, the complex fell into disrepair. Later, parts were demolished or repurposed.

The Löwental convent was situated in the district of the same name in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, in the Bodenseekreis, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Of the former convent complex, the Trautenmühle and a section of the convent wall are still preserved today. The inn "Zum Klosterwirt" also serves as a reminder of the historical site.
