Dominikanerinnenkloster St. Katharina

The origins of the convent are closely linked to St. Martin's Church on Trier's Petrisberg, which was first mentioned between 1190 and 1212. A community of women living there formed a collegiate church by 1234 at the latest, which was converted into a Dominican convent just one year later. In 1238, the nuns received a piece of land on the Moselle, near St. Irminen's Convent, from Knight Ordulph von Oeren. The Austrian Duchess Margarete von Babenberg spent several months in this convent between 1243 and 1244 and supported it with further donations. Around the year 1300, possibly 1302, a Gothic church was built on the new site, which was extended with a chapel in 1479. In the 18th century, the convent underwent extensive renovation, during which the Gothic church was replaced by a Baroque new building by Johannes Seiz. Following the destruction of St. Martin's Convent in 1476, its possessions were transferred to St. Katharina's Convent. From 1794, the French used the complex as a grain warehouse. In the course of secularization, the convent was dissolved in 1802 and passed to the United Hospitals, which established a hospital there. Just four years later, it became a Prussian military hospital, a function it maintained until 1918. The convent church was demolished in 1909. Subsequently, the building served as a state school for construction and retained this use even after World War II, as it was only slightly damaged in 1944.

The former convent is located in Trier, a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was once situated on today's Irminenfreihof, opposite St. Irminen's Convent, and gave its name to the adjacent street along the Moselle river.

Today, the listed building houses the State School for Technology, which is part of Trier University of Applied Sciences.
